UCT intervarsity quiz 2016
INTERVARSITY STUDENT DIETETIC QUIZ – 16th SEPTEMBER 2016
It is an annual tradition that final year Dietetic students of the University of Cape Town(UCT), Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape get together to generate and support camaraderie amongst the students. This year, 2016, UCT hosted the event and in addition to the mentioned outcomes for the students, we took the opportunity to reach out to the underprivileged community in the Cape Metropole.
UCT partnered with FoodBank SA, a non-governmental organization that collects edible food and general household items (detergents, sanitary towels etc.) and redistributes it to beneficiary NGOs. For these purposes, all three universities collected nonperishable food and other items a month before the day of the quiz.
On the 16th September, all 3 universities’ final year dietetic students and staff congregated at Foodbank SA warehouse, where 3 student teams packed the items collected into different hampers – basic food hampers, luxury food hampers and general household hampers. Apart from individual students winning goody bags for answering specific dietetic related questions, there were 3 other awards allocated:
The university that collected the most items was UCT. They have nominated Foodbank SA to receive a monetary gift of R1000.00
The team that packed the most hampers was the Bold Bandanas team. Both the Snazzy Sunglasses and Crazy Caps teams were close on their heels. The Bold Bandanas team nominated Nomaxabiso Centre For Children With Special Needs And Inclusive Education to receive a monetary gift of R1000.
The team that displayed the most spirit / “gees” was the Crazy Hats team. Each team member received an extra goody bag packed with a variety of items.
The huge success of the day would not have been possible without our array of sponsors that donated generously. These include PPS, Danone, Resaf, BBraun, SA Rugby, Division of Human Nutrition, Pfizer, Woolworths, Heart and Stroke foundation, Futurelife and SASA. A heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors for donating various items from stationary and delectable snacks to covering catering costs, receiving monetary sponsorship for the 2 nominated NGOs and a signed SA rugby ball by our current Springboks.
The students and staff alike enjoyed the day thoroughly. The collection in excess of 500kg of non-perishable items and a total of 517 hampers that were packed for various underprivileged communities, made for a memorable day where dietetic students exercised their social responsibility by giving back to the community in a spirit of camaraderie.
